MAURITIUS ISLANDS

 

The Mauritius Islands are located in the Indic Ocean in the South-East of Africa.
In summer there are about 1,348,242 inhabitants on the island, but in winter there are about 1,236,817 visitants.
People speak French and English.
Typical food
The great multiracial mix of Mauritius makes it a place with a rich and varied gastronomic offer. Indian, French and Chinese cuisine coincide when choosing rice, chicken, fish and seafood as the basic ingredients.
The main dishes of Mauritian food are composed of spicy and spicy rice, meat and vegetables prepared with curries and different fish and seafood. Remember that Mauritius is in the southern hemisphere, so summer and winter are the opposite in Europe. Luckily, the differences between stations are minimal.
In Mauritius the summer develops between November and April. During these months the climate is warm and humid. The highest temperatures occur between December and February. During these months rainfall is abundant, especially in the central plateau during February and March.
The best months to practice diving are from December to March. For deep-sea fishing, the ideal season runs from October to April.
Between January and April the probability of cyclones can not be ruled out.
Mauritius in winter
Between May and October the temperature is cooler and there are winds from the east side, which is why it is the season preferred by surfers. During the more “cold” months, July and August, the west coast becomes the favorite of travelers, as it is more sheltered.
The lowest temperatures occur in July reaching 20ºC.

Flora and Fauna
Mauritius has a very rich and varied flora thanks to the pleasant climate of the island. There is a great variety of flowers, among which are the red and orange bougainvillea, laurels, roses, camellias, azaleas, hydrangeas and orchids, as well as lotus flowers, hibiscus and water lilies. Probably the most beautiful flower of Mauritius is the anthurium, a beautiful red flower with a bright appearance.
Among the trees that grow on the island are the great banyan of India, the Cause, the flamboyant, camphor, ebony and different species of palm trees.
One of the best ways to get to know the flora of Mauritius is to visit the Botanical Garden of Pamplemousses, one of the best in the world.
Fauna of Mauritius
Currently there are only native species of Mauritius since, after the arrival of the settlers, many animals were extinct. One of the best-known missing animals is the Dodo, one of Mauritius’s icons. It was a huge bird that could not fly, so it was an easy prey and disappeared in the seventeenth century.
In spite of the large number of animals that disappeared after the arrival of the man, nowadays in Mauritius can be found infinity of birds, deer, reptiles, and giant tortoises that were transferred from other countries.
The most striking fauna of Mauritius is undoubtedly the one that lives in the ocean. The island is surrounded by a coral ring that makes thousands of animal and plant species color and life color the shores of the island.
